CHALLENGES OF A SECOND CAREER |
Failure Factors of MAF Veterans in Second Careers
-
Unrecognised Trade/ Skill - A majority of trades/ skills that the personnel acquired during service are not recognised in the public sector.
-
Non-Attendance of Resettlement Training at PERHEBAT –Veterans who fail to attend any resettlement training offered by PERHEBAT may not acquire sufficient skills/ trade proficiency. Opting for on-the-job training (OJT) during resettlement period may not be sufficient.
-
Choosing unsuitable Field of Training – Undergoing resettlement training which is not suited to the job applied for.
-
Age Factor – Employers are more inclined to choose younger candidates.
-
Poor Command of English Language – A poor command of English causes them to fail to obtain a better job.
-
Lack of Seriousness during Interviews – It is necessary to pay attention to grooming and be sufficiently prepared during interviews.
-
Too Selective - Many have turned down job offers as they are too selective of the position and salary offered.
-
Distance – Some MAF veterans are not willing to work far from home.
- Lack of Direction - Failure to determine their direction in life has caused MAF veterans to make the wrong choices when attending resettlement training which resulted in:
-
Changing of existing skills with other skills while undergoing resettlement training where the previous and new skills are not put to use at all after the end of their service.
-
Attending resettlement training only for the sake of fulfilling service requirement.
-
Inability to evaluate suitable skills to be acquired owing to lack of clear guidance on the field to be pursued.
- Inability to decide whether to be an employee or to be an entrepreneur.
