Death Benefits

  1. If an officer or serviceman dies while in service and his death is not attributable to service, his dependant will be paid derivative pension and derivative gratuity or dependant’s pension and dependant’s gratuity. If the death is attributable to service, the dependant may be paid dependant’s pension in addition to derivative pension.

  2. If a pensioner dies, his dependant or next-of-kin must notify the DVA immediately to enable the service pension of the deceased to be discontinued and for the payment to be transferred to the dependant as derivative pension.

  3. Documentation matters for widow/widower. If the pensioner dies, his dependant must submit the following documents to the Pension Division of the DVA for action:
  • Original and 2 photocopies of Ex-Servicemen Card/ pension card , 2 photocopies of Service Record Acknowledgement Book.

  • 2 photocopies of identity card of the widow/widower or the beneficiary of the pensioner

  • 2 photocopies of the pensioner’s death certificate.

  • 2 photocopies of identity card or birth certificate of each of the pensioner’s unmarried children below the age of 21 years.

  • 2 photocopies of marriage certificate or divorce papers (if divorced) between the widow/widower and the deceased.

  • Original copy of certification of child custody from a commissioner for oaths, the court or nearest Qadi’s Office (if the widow/widower is divorced or the deceased’s children are under the care of others).

  • 2 photocopies of the front page of bank account book and the Payment of Pension through Bank Form (BQ-BP-03) duly certified by the appropriate bank officer.

  • Duly completed and certified Information on Dependants of a Deceased Military Pensioner Form (BQ-BP-04).

Derivative pension will cease:

  • When a child has attained 21 years of age or married or completed a first degree education at a higher education institution which ever is sooner. A disabled child will receive this pension for life.

  • After a lapse of 12½ years from the date of retirement and if the marriage was contracted after retirement.

Education Allowance.

If the widow/widower is the beneficiary of dependant’s pension according to Table 6 or 9, his/her children may be given an education allowance not exceeding RM685.00 per annum. Other conditions for the granting of this allowance are as per paragraph 2.5.
